![]() Fil-Am Poet-Novelist Bino Realuyo The U.P. Creative Writing Center, in cooperation with Balay Kalinaw, held its first Writers’ Kwentuhan for the schoolyear last June 2 at the Balay Kalinaw, U.P. Diliman. The Kwentuhan featured Fil-Am poet-novelist Bino Realuyo, author of the highly acclaimed novel, The Umbrella Country. Published by Ballantine Books, The Umbrella Country, Realuyo’s first novel, was a finalist in the Barnes and Noble Discover Great New Writers Award and was chosen by Booklist Magazine as one of its Top Ten First Novels of 1999. Realuyo, who spent his youth in Sampaloc, Manila, attended the American University in Washington, D.C. and the Universidad Argentina de la Empresa in Buenos Aires. He co-founded the Asian American Writers Workshop in New York City in 1991 and recently served as guest editor of the special issue on Filipino Literature of The Literary Review. He was also awarded a fellowship by the New York Foundation for the Arts for his novel-in-progress, The Ashen Parts. His arrival in Manila marks his first visit to the Philippines in 15 years. The Writers’ Kwentuhan served as a venue for Realuyo to speak before U.P. writers, students and faculty members.
